As promised, here is a review of my Sunday teaching on God’s Initiative in “Listening Prayer.” This adds to our on-going communion with the Lord to make obvious that God often takes the initiative in our conversations with Him.
God often communicates with us when we least expect it. He surprises us with His thoughts put into our spirits. We become aware of His voice as something “coming to mind” that we recognize originated from outside of our own thought processes. We awaken and exclaim, “Lord, that was from You!” With the young prophet Samuel, we declare, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10.
So, something “occurs” to you. God created us for Himself. He put within us a Sprit-to-spirit communication interface. Consider these texts to support this: John 4:24. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Romans 8:14, 16. 14. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. . . 16. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. Spiritually we will hear a voice behind us saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21
Someone suggested to me the other day, “God speaks loud enough to hear, yet soft enough to ignore.”
You may find it helpful to be reminded of three kinds of prayer. All three are legitimate:
“God is a great communicator. Let’s become better listeners.”
Let’s look again at nine ways God speaks to us today. The goal is not to memorize them, but to experience them. Take some time to recall how many you identify in your personal walk with God?
Glory is a spiritual taste of heaven right now.
Glory makes things of earth grow strangely dim.
Glory is what we were made to experience forever.
Please encourage others in your Life Groups with your insights into the surprising voice of God. Next posting, we will see the value of referring to “Listening Prayer” as “Constant Communion!”
