The indwelling Spirit of Truth is an excellent communicator. So, what does He sound like? Let’s explore the wide variety of ways He speaks to us.

First and foundational, God speaks to us through the Word of God, the Bible. That should be obvious. The Bible is God’s self-disclosure. It is God- breathed. Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” All that follows below is to be measured against divine revelation in the Scriptures. It is the test of truth.

The Author of the Bible live in your heart. The same Spirit that inspired the writers of the 66 books of the Bible is the same Spirit that indwell every true believer. The Author of the Bible is the Authenticator of the Bible. We call this “illumination.”

The inspired writer of Hebrews declares: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

In addition to objective truth that we read or hear directly from the written pages of the Bible, the Spirit of Truth within our hearts is able to communicate directly, subjectively to our conscious heart and minds. Again, the subjective – that is the personal, internal – impressions of what the Holy Spirit is saying to us, is always to be measured against the objective, written Word of God.

Therefore, in our heart’s perceptions, God sounds like the Bible. The Spirit that inspired the Bible can speak within your heart to remind you of its teachings, and make its application personally clear to you, the child of God. Again, our subjective heart-impressions are always to  be measured by the objective Word of God

And now, let’s consider other ways the Spirit is able to communicate to your listening spirit.

Paul says, “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:16-17. Assurance of our salvation is one of the earliest experiences with the Holy Spirit’s whisper that most of us have experienced.

Stop and think about that experience. In your heart, the core of your being, you sense His pleasure. Some say that “you know in your knower” the presence and pleasure of your Lord within. Call it peace, well-being, rest, kinship, assurance, or love, it is more than an emotional feeling. It is at a higher level — a spiritual “feeling.”

God is an emotional Being. He created us in His image. He created us with the capacity to respond to Him emotionally. He loves us. We love him. So the Spirit’s voice within can be both wordless and powerful at the same time. Just settle back and allow His love to wash over you. Hear it with your spirit. Yes, we walk by faith, not feelings. But faith opens us to Godly feelings.

Be encouraged. God knows your heart language. And we can learn to hear His heart. Please stay with me into the coming postings. God’s voice has many varieties of expressions.
